Organizations invest significant time, energy, and resources into learning and development initiatives, yet many struggle to achieve lasting behavior change and measurable performance improvement. While training events are often well designed and highly engaging, participants frequently return to workplaces that lack the systems, reinforcement, and accountability necessary to sustain new skills and behaviors.

This interactive session explores the critical factors that influence learning transfer and examines why traditional training approaches often fail to produce lasting results. Drawing on research, practical experience, and concepts from Dr. Mike's forthcoming ATD Press book Designing Training That Sticks: Closing the Learning-Doing Gap, participants will explore proven strategies for bridging the gap between learning and performance.

Through discussion, reflection, and application activities, participants will learn how to design learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom and create the conditions necessary for meaningful behavior change. Attendees will leave with practical tools and actionable ideas they can immediately apply to strengthen learning sustainment within their organizations.

🎤 This session is also a sneak peek of the presentation Dr. Mike has proposed for ATD's International Conference & Exposition (ICE), currently pending ATD's approval — a chance to preview this content before it potentially hits the national stage.

About the Speaker

Dr. Michael L. Dorsey, affectionately known as Dr. Mike, is an author, speaker, executive coach, and talent development strategist with more than 25 years of experience helping individuals, teams, and organizations improve performance and achieve meaningful results. He is the Founder and Principal of Michael Dorsey International, LLC and previously served as Chief Learning Officer for the Maryland Department of Human Services, where he provided strategic leadership for learning and development initiatives serving more than 6,700 employees statewide.

Dr. Mike is an ATD Master Facilitator and has delivered learning experiences for organizations across government, nonprofit, higher education, and corporate sectors. He is certified in Emotional Intelligence (EQ-i 2.0), MBTI, DiSC, and HBDI and regularly facilitates leadership development, instructional design, and talent development programs.

He is the author of The One Click Mindset and The Ownership Shift, and the forthcoming ATD Press book Designing Training That Sticks: Closing the Learning-Doing Gap. His work focuses on helping organizations bridge the gap between learning and performance by creating environments where training leads to sustained behavior change and measurable results.
